The consecutive summer north winds did not last long enough for 5th Kitesurf Festival to lose the summer period. So, when the ideal forecast came up with the western winds that makes Drepano look like a playground for kitesurfers, everything was prepared and the weekend 17th and 18th of September, the Kitesurf Festival powered by WBSF, celebrated its 5 years!

All these took place at the beach of Drepano, right in front of the imposing Titan plant, major festival’s sponsor, which for yet another year provided tremendous support with infrastructure and personnel, necessary supplies for the proper and safe conduction of the event.

The weather during the weekend was more than summery, with the temperature rising higher with the spectacle offered by the athletes. Dozens of entries from all over Greece, but what pleased us particularly this year, was the participants from abroad, such as Canada, France and Argentina.

The beach was formed especially since early in the morning in order to host athletes and visitors. In Drepano beach apart from the kitesurf races, everyone could enjoy coffee and snacks by the WBSF Bar and Weekend Coffee House, refreshing ice cream from “Entelvais”. Everything that someone could ask during the hot weekend.

5 years Kitesurf Festival

The first day of the festival began with registrations at the Secretariat Office which had set up at the tent of Cape Drepano, where all athletes could get their racing lycras and the necessary athletes’ kit. The riders meeting followed  in front of the stand of the Region of Western Greece, who participated in the 5th Kitesurf Festival as a collaboration.

After all the details concerning the racing part were given by the judges, athletes just before the first heat filled got their energy by Frulite On The Go and divided into group for warm up and stretching with the trainer Asteria Grilla, to avoid any muscle injuries.

The racing part started with freestyle men and athletes really made it difficult for the judges’ decisions, since this year the level was even higher.

The heats came to the semi-final round, with the finals set for the next day.

During the day, we saw a very impressive moves in the category of Old School which held in single and double elimination.

The Kitesurf Festival is an event that every year is designed to evolve and follow patterns and trends of global events. In 2015 added the category of Highest Jump, in cooperation with the Woo Sports. This year, for the first time in Greece, the category Race Foil had its own seperate race, a category that … literally “fly”!

The first round of Race Foil completed on Saturday and and all categories would race for the finals on Sunday morning.

This is how the first day of the 5th Kitesurf Festival ended and athletes and visitors continued their afternoon at the WBSF Beach Bar enjoying the magnificent view offered by Drepano beach.

Right after, women took turn for the Freestyle Women and definitely won the impressions with their performance.

Winner was declared Maria Agriogianni from Astros, with a “rail to blind” that won her the first place on the podium!

The day continued with finals for Old School, where the local Harris Katsarakis prevailed on Lykourgos Neofotistos from Evia. Both of them gave the public unique spectacle with their moves.

Next races was the very impressive course racing for directional and twin tip boards. Dozens of kites filled the sky of Drepano, where the athletes raced for 5 km in triangular course.

Last and perhaps most impressive of all the races was the final of the Men’s Freestyle, in which  Tom Charlton and Harris Katsarakis had qualified, while Lykourgos Neofotistos and Ben Bowd left to confront for the final golden ticket. Unfortunately, the air conditions were not satisfactory, so they did not complete the competition. All four of them stoodon the  podium, where they received gifts from WBSF for their participation.
